Travelling Man (Inland Waterways)
© Arthur Marshall
They say that every river winds somewhere to the sea
And every wandering sailor craves the harbour’s lee
And the sea goes on for ever until it breaks upon the sand
But never again, never again, never again
Will there be a place for the travelling man.
We do not care for cities, the tarmac or the towns
We love the moving water and the country all around
But those who set the rules, do not understand
And never again, never again, never again
Will there be a place for the travelling man.
They talk of bricks and mortar, of terrace or bungalows
Neat suburban houses in neat suburban rows
But there are no locks or bridges, no sense of where it all began
And never again, never again, never again
Will there be a place for the travelling man.
They say there are rules to follow, but they always change the rules
They say there are laws that bind them, but the law is a rich man’s tool
They speak much of freedom, but there is no freedom in this land
And never again, never again, never again
Will there be a place for the travelling man.

As Arthur says "This is one for all the liveaboards, the continuous cruisers and the stay-arounds whose lifestyle is
threatened by those who only care for bricks and mortar, who need to know where you are at all times..."
